MUPU ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: PROP 39 ENERGY RETROFIT
To help develop and implement the use of Proposition 39 energy project funds, Green Econome performed an energy audit at Mupu Elementary School, in Santa Paula, CA. The assessment revealed multiple inefficiencies throughout the building's interior and envelope.
Of the measures proposed, the school focused on optimizing the classroom lighting and HVAC to enhance the learning environment and comfort of its occupants. Green Econome installed brighter and more efficient LED lighting. Aging HVAC units were replaced with higher efficiency systems, and sensors to moderate the temperature of unoccupied space were installed, along with programmable thermostats for remote control and monitoring.
To increase the effectiveness of the building envelope and HVAC system, R30 blow fiberglass was installed in the attic space, which previously leaked conditioned air. The campus also had window film fitted on each building’s single-pane windows, which rejects up to 60% of total solar heat gain.
An immediate drop in energy consumption was seen on the school’s utility bills after the retrofits were completed in the Summer 2016. Overall, the school’s electric usage declined below FY 2012-2013 levels and by 2017 had realized a 15% reduction in energy use intensity.
